Work on the £1.2 million restoration and refurbishment of the Golden Lion Hotel in Maryport, one of the town’s most historic buildings, is due to be complete and the hotel open for the Christmas & New Year period December 2009.

Re-opening as the towns premier hotel offering 15 bedrooms, a restaurant, bar and function room catering for up to 200 people. Easy access to the beautiful West Lakes Coast, the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from Allonby to Silloth with a large sandy beach, bay and sand dunes at Mawbray.

The Shipping Brow building, once Maryport`s top hotel, will be given a new lease of life and welcome guests to enjoy the comfortable surroundings with views from the bar over the Victorian harbour, Solway Firth & Scottish coastline, often awarding spectacular sunsets.

Charles Darwin once stayed here, Thomas Ismay founder of the White Star Line grew up here and frequented the hotel, Lowry also stayed in Maryport on occasion and painted several pieces including the towns Harbour area and Shipping Brow.

There are several top quality attractions in the town to visit including, Lake District Coast Aquarium, Wave Centre, Senhouse Roman Museum and the newest addition, Carlton Creations. The annual Blues Festival which takes place over 3 days, is rated as being in the top 3 Blues events in the world and attract around 30.000 visitors.
